Anyone into making or restoring rustic furniture?
My hubby has had a bit of a hard slog lately with a health issue and has been a bit down, but he’s experessed interest in pursuing the above as a hobby. Hubby’s hobby!
Does anyone here know much about it, like how he could get started, what’s available, and how he could get in touch with others who share the interest?
We’re in Sydney Australia btw.
Had a shop & would sometimes repair or duplicate “rustic” pieces.
Would research books & photos on the subject pick a stye or piece ,and “adopt” the design .
Found the biggest problem in restoration to be finding wood in the odd thicknesses rustic builders used.
Having “new ” wood milled to size just looked like new wood & took time to make it look like the real thing.
Rustic does not mean “crude” .
The “home made ” pieces were often built from green, freshly hewn wood for immediate use and would often check & split as it aged which is fine w/ those who appreciate rustic or “primitive” furniture.
Access to antique or old “salvage” wood is a big help & a friendly mill is a huge help.
Nice thing about rustic furniture is that you do not need a complete power shop.
The “old timers” did not have them & worked with basic hand tools using basic strong joinery & simple finishes.
Almost never used screw fixings unless they were same “vintage” as the piece & had to be visible.
Search for antique hardware & tools( hinges , locks ,planes, saws, chisels, boring braces & bits pulls etc ) for the “authentic” look.
In US & nothing is very “old” but there are sites and swap meets for all sorts of odd bits & pieces; likely the same type of sources in Australia.
Check for resources online.
Just some thoughts based on my own research ( before the internet).
Best regards
